Packaged Fire-Suppression Pump System
Engine Driven Horizontal Split-Case Pump
GENERAL:
Furnish and install a prefabricated, skid-mounted Fire Pump System. The system shall be for fire protection service and shall be supplied with the specified drivers, controls, and pump accessory items. The pump drivers and controls shall be listed by the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) and approved by Factory Mutual (FM) for fire protection service. The pumping system manufacturer shall have a UL-9F35 label certifying third-party approval. The pumping equipment shall be installed as recommended in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Pamphlet 20, ‘Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps’, latest edition, and accepted books of the authority having jurisdiction. Where installation procedures conflict between NFPA recommendations and the approving authority, the authority’s requirements shall take precedence. The system shall consist of a primary Diesel-driven pump. The fire pump package shall be as manufactured by NAMCO Div, model _____.
PUMP AND DIESEL ENGINE:
The Diesel-driven fire pump shall be designed to deliver _____ gpm at a total head of _____ feet or _____ psi. The engine shall have a horsepower rating satisfactory for driving the fire pump at an elevation of _____ feet above sea level. The fire pump shall also be capable of delivering not less than 150 percent of rated flow at not less than 65 percent of rated head. The shutoff head (head attained at zero flow) shall not exceed 120 percent rated head. The fire pump shall be a horizontal split-case type fire pump. The pump shall be labeled specifically for fire-protection service, and connected to the fire standpipe system. The suction supply for the fire pumps shall be from a public service water main at a maximum pressure of _____ psi(g) and a minimum pressure of _____ psi(g) (or from a ground storage tank). The pump casing shall be cast iron with (125)(250) pound-rated discharge flange, machined to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) dimensions. The Diesel-driven fire pump shall be as manufactured by Aurora, model _____, or equal.
The Diesel pump engine shall be a horizontal-shaft type internal combustion engine, rated for _____ horsepower at a rotational speed of _____ rpm in a clockwise rotation, as viewed from the driver-coupling side of the pump. The engine shall be provided by the pump manufacturer. The engine shall include a UL listed emergency manual operator, factory wired and mounted on the engine junction box for standby engine starting and operation in case of main controller failure or interconnecting wiring malfunction. Cooling waterlines, including pressure regulator, strainer, bypass line(s), drain connection, and necessary fittings for engine cooling system, pre-piped and factory mounted, shall be provided. Also to be included are a factory-installed electric engine jacket water heater (engine block heater) and a fuel supply and return piping
system, as required by NFPA Pamphlet 20. The engine shall be run tested by the manufacturer before shipment. The engine shall be as manufactured by Cummins, model _____, or equal.
The automatic Diesel engine controller shall be UL listed and FM approved specifically for fire pump service. The controller shall be a dual-battery type, with a built-in battery charger, weekly test timer, solid-state crank control, battery alternating circuit, battery failure lockout and contacts for remote alarms. The controller manufacturer shall furnish triple alarms to indicate engine failure, battery failure, engine running, AC power failure, low oil pressure, high engine-coolant temperature, overspeed switch in the ‘Off’ position, and low fuel level. The controls shall be housed in a NEMA (2)(3R)(4)(4X)(12) enclosure. The main controller shall be as manufactured by Firetrol, model FTA-1100, or equal.
The Diesel engine accessories shall include a double-wall, UL-listed and/or FM-approved fuel-oil tank, of sufficient usable capacity to provide one gallon of fuel per maximum-rated engine horsepower, plus an additional 5% sump volume and an additional 5% expansion volume, minimum usable capacity of _____ gallons. The tank shall be furnished with support legs for floor mounting, vent and fill piping, fuel supply and return piping, and a direct-reading mechanical fuel-level gauge. Additional Diesel engine fittings shall include flexible exhaust connectors, a residential-rated muffler (properly insulated if installed within the fire-suppression system enclosure), UL/FM pilot-operated main relief valve, enclosed relief valve discharge waste cone with sight glass, one set of dual engine batteries with cables and battery mounting rack. The system manufacturer shall also include all other accessories required by a Diesel-driven fire-suppression system as defined by NFPA Pamphlet 20.
JOCKEY PUMP:
The jockey pump shall be a multi-stage, centrifugal type with a capacity of _____ gallons per minute at a total head of _____ feet, and driven by a _____ hp, 3450 rpm, 460V / 3 ph / 60 Hz, NEMA Design ‘B’ electric motor in an ODP enclosure. The jockey pump shall be as manufactured by Goulds, Series SSV.
The jockey pump controller shall include a fused disconnect switch, magnetic starter, control transformer, ‘Hand-Off-Auto’ switch, pressure switch, and minimum run timer. The controller shall be housed in a NEMA 2 enclosure and factory mounted on the NAMCO pumping system. The jockey-pump controller shall be as manufactured by Firetrol, Model FTA-500, or equal.
COMMON REQUIREMENTS:
The NAMCO pumping system shall be furnished with the piping accessory items for the pump installation that will adapt the pump connections to the fire protection system and test connections as follows. Fittings subjected to pump discharge pressure shall be of an ANSI (150)(300) pound rating. Fittings subjected to suction pressure shall be of an ANSI 150 pound rating.
SYSTEM PACKAGES SHALL INCLUDE:
An automatic air-release valve, main pump casing relief valve and suction and discharge pressure gauges shall be provided.
OPTIONAL FEATURES:
Note: At least one testing apparatus shall be provided for the packaged system.
PERFORMANCE TESTING:
The packaged pumping system shall be hydrostatically tested to a minimum pressure of 200 psi(g) or at 50 psi in excess of the maximum pressure when the maximum pressure is greater than 150 psi(g). The test shall be performed at the factory prior to shipment. The entire assembly shall be painted red with two (2) coats of manufacturer’s standard industrial enamel paint system after hydrostatic and electrical tests.
A field acceptance performance test shall be conducted upon completion of pump installation. The tests shall be made by flowing water through calibrated nozzles, approved flow meters or other such accurate devices as may be conducted as recommended in NFPA Pamphlet 20 by the
manufacturer of the packaged pump system or his representative in the presence of the authority having jurisdiction and with the authority’s final approval and acceptance.
WARRANTY:
The fire-suppression system shall carry the manufacturer’s standard warranty, and shall be effective a minimum of one year from date of shipment of the system to the job-site.
